打击类膜鸣扁胭型乐器。形似今日新疆地区的手鼓,状扁平,木框只一面蒙皮。演奏时一手持鼓,一手拍击,’或以小锤击之。与今日不同者唯边框无小铁钱或小环。鼓面绘有图案。在敦煌壁画中,此鼓出现不多,莫高窟盛唐第379窟,五代第6,351窟及榆林窟元代第3窟及第10窟绘有此鼓图像。(郑汝中)---《敦煌学大辞典》

西藏密宗的手鼓,俗称嘎巴拉鼓,通常由两片天灵盖骨制成,双面,鼓面以人皮制成。窄腰,腰间系以采带。鼓皮涂以绿色。于鼓腰又系两个小骨锤,手持鼓腰摇动,小锤即击鼓面发声。修法时摇鼓,代表赞颂诸佛菩萨的功德,配合金刚铃、金刚杵使用。除了手鼓之外,藏密中还有一种特殊的鼓:内中曲柄鼓,它的鼓锤是曲如弓形的,鼓的直径约一米,下有一柄,颂经时,僧人自己左手持鼓柄,右手用曲柄的鼓锤伴奏。——《佛教器物简述》
